Efren Peñaflorida, who started a "pushcart classroom" in the Philippines to bring education to poor children as an alternative to gang membership, has been named the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year.

CNN's Anderson Cooper revealed Peñaflorida's selection at the conclusion of the third-annual "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute" at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday night.

The gala event, taped before an audience of 3,000 at the Kodak Theatre, premieres on Thanksgiving, November 26, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the global networks of CNN.

The broadcast, which honors the top 10 CNN Heroes of 2009, features performances by Grammy Award-winning artist Carrie Underwood, R&B crooner Maxwell and British pop sensation Leona Lewis.

Peñaflorida, who will receive $100,000 to continue his work with the Dynamic Teen Company, was selected after seven weeks of online voting at CNN.com. More than 2.75 million votes were cast.

"Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry," Peñaflorida said upon accepting the honor. "Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need.

"So to each and every person inside in this theater and for those who are watching at home, the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed. Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell to my co-volunteers ... you are the change that you dream as I am the change that I dream and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be."

The top 10 CNN Heroes, chosen by a blue-ribbon panel from an initial pool of more than 9,000 viewer nominations, were each honored with a documentary tribute and introduced by a celebrity presenter. Each of the top 10 Heroes receives $25,000.

"With the recognition they receive on our stage," said Cooper, who hosted the tribute, "they'll be able to help thousands and thousands of people. Through their efforts, lives will be changed and lives will be saved."

Maxwell sang "Help Somebody" from his first album in eight years, 'BLACKsummers'night.'

Lewis, a three-time Grammy nominee, performed "Happy," from her second album, "Echo."

All three performances echoed the spirit of the CNN Heroes campaign, which salutes everyday people whose extraordinary accomplishments are making a difference in their communities and beyond.

Presenters included Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Neil Patrick Harris, Pierce Brosnan, Dwayne Johnson, Eva Mendes, Randy Jackson, Greg Kinnear, George Lopez and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

"This record number of nominations is further evidence of the momentum CNN Heroes has built in just a few short years," said Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide.

"Viewers have been engaged by these stories of inspiration and accomplishment beyond our expectations. It is truly an honor to be able to introduce the CNN Heroes to our global audience every year."

Again this year, producer/director Joel Gallen served as executive producer of "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute." Among his credits, Gallen produced telethon events supporting victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina, winning an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award for "America: A Tribute to Heroes."

The Kodak Theatre is best known as the first permanent home of the Academy Awards.

INC faithful break into loud wailing

A loud, pained wail marked the grief of hundreds of thousands of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) members as they watched the casket of INC leader Eraño “Ka Erdy” Manalo loaded into the funeral car Monday morning.

At around 11 a.m., mourners outside the INC Central Temple on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City broke into loud sobs, while they watched a video screen showing the interment of Manalo, the executive minister.

The wailing lasted around five minutes, causing motorists stalled in traffic to roll down their windows to check what was happening.

Rains failed to disperse the crowd that occupied the stretch of Commonwealth Avenue from UP-Ayala Technohub all the way to Tandang Sora Avenue.

A 57-year-old woman even stuck it out despite not being able to see Manalo’s remains since the start of the wake.

“I have been waiting in line since Wednesday but I wasn’t able to get in,” said Rosario Espino, an INC member based in Montalban, Rizal, since 1992.

She said some of her neighbors, however, were able to get inside the Central Temple and view the remains of Manalo.

1.5 million to 2 million

Chief Supt. Elmo San Diego, Quezon City Police District director, estimated the crowd to be between 1.5 million and 2 million Monday.

“The event was orderly, very peaceful, there were no untoward incidents,” he told reporters in a phone interview.

Supt. Constante Agpaoa, QCPD Station 6 commander, said mourners were scattered from Philcoa to Luzon, the Visayas and University Avenues.

Agpaoa said some of the mourners had been there since Sunday afternoon.

Some mourners came from Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Ilocos Norte and Cagayan, according to the pins they wore on their shirts as they walked through the crowd.

Of the thousands who endured a fickle weather, only a few were able to get inside the INC complex to personally witness the interment.

Color-coded ribbons

Only those with ribbons pinned to a photo of the dead INC leader were allowed to enter the complex, according to an announcement over a public sound system.

The announcement said the ribbons were color-coded—white for the immediate family, green for pastors and ministers, purple for workers of the Central Temple and light blue for church servers.

Members of the INC’s Security Community Action Network provided a human barricade at all the main gates of the church compound to prevent members who were not given ribbons from gaining entry.

Four video screens

The INC hierarchy set up four video screens outside the Central Temple so that mourners and members who could not get inside the temple may be able to watch the interment ceremony.

One video screen was installed in front of the Central Temple, one on Central Avenue, and two on Commonwealth Avenue.

During the interment ceremony, some INC members closed their umbrellas so that other people behind them could see the screen better.

Other onlookers decided to take shelter under two pedestrian overpasses on Commonwealth Avenue, where they could be protected from the rain and at the same time have a birds’ eye view of the mammoth crowd.

The closure of Commonwealth Avenue from Elliptical Road to Luzon Avenue caused heavy traffic buildup on the eastbound lane of the avenue that lasted more than an hour after the interment.

Supt. Rudie Valoria, Quezon City Traffic Enforcement Group head, said that at least 5,000 vehicles were parked on Commonwealth Avenue since Sunday.

Two helicopters alternately hovered over the INC central complex Monday morning.

ONLY the burial of martyred Sen. Ninoy Aquino and that of his wife, former President Cory, would equal the number of people that attended the burial and wake of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) executive minister Erano “Ka Erdy” Manalo.

Not even the attendance at the wake and burial of Jaime Cardinal Sin could compare with that of Ka Erdy whose remains were entombed in the INC main cathedral in Quezon City.

His followers so loved and respected him that they braved the rain and the heat to send him off.

All the INC members who attended Ka Erdy’s burial and wake were genuine in their grief.

Simple burial for Ka Erdy

The nation joined the Iglesia Ni Cristo in honoring on Monday the late INC Executive Minister Erano “Ka Erdy” G. Manalo, whose remains were laid to rest in simple yet touching ceremonies attended by the country’s top political leaders and over 50,000 of the religious sect’s followers.

Rain and tears poured at the INC Central Compound on Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, as the body of one the country’s most revered religious leaders was deposited into a concrete white tomb, bedecked with flowers, at the center of the Tabernacle at exactly 12:15 pm on Monday.

Thousands gathered at the Tabernacle to personally witness the interment and multitudes of INC members who braved the inclement weather but were only allowed to witness the ceremonies in video walls set up outside the INC headquarters cried, many unabashedly, at the mere sight of the casket being transported to the Tabernacle.

Except for the 21-gun salute conducted by an elite squad of cadets of the Philippine Military Academy and the handing over of the INC and Philippine flags to son Eduardo Manalo and Ka Erdy’s widow Cristina, respectively, there were no other formal funeral rites conducted.

There were several changes in pall bearers – the military honor guard, INC ecclesiastical district heads and funeral personnel in full regalia – throughout the nearly one-and-half hour funeral for the 84-year-old INC head.

Prayers for the dead that are usually practiced by other religions are taboo under the INC doctrine which stresses that only God and no other intercessions and other influences will decide on the fate of a spirit.

Minutes earlier, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo paid her final respects to Manalo and condoled with the Manalo family headed by widow, Cristina, and Manalo’s eldest son and successor, Eduardo “Ka Eddie Boy” Manalo.

Accompanied by her sons. Rep. Juan Miguel Arroyo (Lakas, Pampanga) and Diosdado Macapagal-Arroyo (Lakas-Kampi, Camarines Sur), Arroyo viewed the remains of the INC leader at the Sanctuario, where it was transferred hours before being laid to rest.

Vice President Noli De Castro substituted for Arroyo in handing over the Philippine flag to Manalo’s widow. The flag draped alternately with the INC red-green-white banner symbolized the country’s deference to Manalo whom both religious and political leaders credited for propagating the biblical teachings of the home-grown religion in at least 90 countries.

Aside from De Castro, also paying their last respects for Manalo were Chief Justice Reynato Puno, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, former President Joseph Estrada, former First Lady Imelda R. Marcos, Senators Manuel Villar, Francis Pangilinan, Panfilo Lacson, Jinggoy Estrada, Mar Roxas, Francis Escudero, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Loren Legarda, and Ramon Bong Revilla Jr.

Congressmen who were sighted at the funeral were Reps. Matias Defensor, Roman Romulo, Albert Garcia, Dan Fernandez, Mark Llandro Mendoza, Annie Susano, Cynthia Villar, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Nanette Castelo-Daza, and Mitos Magsaysay.

Among Arroyo government officials spotted were Finance Secretary Gary Teves, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, Undersecretary Verna Puyat-Romulo, former Environment Secretary Michael Defensor, Public Attorney’s Office chief Persida Acosta, and LWUA Administrator Butch Pichay.

Deputy Ombudsman Orlando Casimiro and Enrile were among the first to arrive. Casimiro was spotted at the INC compound as early as 6:45 am.

Local officials in attendance were Mayors Feliciano Belmonte Jr, of Quezon City, Alfredo Lim of Manila, Benhur Abalos of Mandaluyong City, Governors Tet Garcia of Bataan, Ningning Lazaro of Laguna, and Quezon City Councilor Winston Castelo.

INC district leaders from the 90 countries where Iglesia churches were established were present in yesterday’s funeral.

The simple rites started at exactly 11 am., when the INC flag was folded to signal the transfer of the casket to from the Sanctuario at the Main Temple to the Tabernacle which was just about 300 meters away.

From the temple, the remains were transported in a funeral limousine to the Tabernacle where at least 3,000 INC leaders and their families, mourners and sympathizers waited.

The casket arrived at the Tabernacle at 11:35 am and was put inside the temporary crypt at 12:10.

Except for the touching musical background and the wailing of some INC leaders, the ceremonies went on silently and orderly.

De Castro was given the honor of viewing the body of Manalo when the casket was opened for the last time minutes before it was to be buried.

Cristina planted a kiss at her husband’s remains as family members took a last glimpse of the well-loved religious leader.

Manalo’s ’s body will be transferred at a mausoleum which is now undergoing construction at the INC compound. The remains of his father, INC founder and Executive Minister Felix Manalo, were expected to be likewise relocated at the same mausoleum from the INC local temple in San Juan.

There will be no major shifts on how the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) is charting itself, spiritually and politically, with the death of its leader Eraño “Ka Erdie” Manalo.

As a religious group, its teachings, practices and values are etched on solid ground, but the highly disciplined Christian sect, known for its bloc-voting practice in elections, might adopt a more objective political view with the change of leadership.

In a sense, the change of leadership is actually a misnomer since Manalo’s son, Eduardo “Ka Eddie Boy,” 54, is expected to carry the torch and the family legacy.

The elder Manalo himself assumed as executive minister of the INC also after the death of his father, Felix, who founded the religious organization on July 27, 1914.

Sources close to the inner circle of Ka Erdie say the late religious leader had been grooming the younger Manalo for years, just like what Felix did to his son a generation ago.

Eduardo has been the INC’s deputy executive minister, or the "pangalawang tagapamahalang pangkalahatan," and his assumption as his father’s successor will be just a formality, says an INC member.

Ka Erdie, 84, died of cardiopulmonary arrest Monday. He took over as executive minister following Felix Manalo’s death, and was credited for expanding the church internationally.

It was during Ka Erdie’s term that the INC became a major political force with its estimated 2-3 million bloc-voting members.

No major departure

Political analyst Angelito Banayo believes there will be "no major departure from the management side” with the succession of Eduardo Manalo to the INC hierarchy.

Banayo notes that Eduardo has been acting as the chief operating officer for some time now, although the late INC head still had the last say on religious matters.

While it makes sense that the Manalo family prepared for a smooth transition of power, members, however, were left in the dark on who made the final decision.

“We’d been hearing that Ka Eddie was making the decisions but the members were not too sure,” one INC member says.

Banayo, who is also a political consultant of Senator Panfilo Lacson, says the younger Manalo called the shots on political decisions “at least in the last two elections.”

If this is true, the younger Manalo is proving to be more adept and savvy than the father.

In the 2004 elections, the INC, instead of having to choose between actor Fernando Poe Jr. and Lacson, passed the ball to the two warring opposition bets. When Poe and Lacson failed to settle their differences, the INC did the next best thing: it threw its support to President Arroyo.

Since it was a close race between Arroyo and Poe, the INC vote was seen as a deciding factor in favor of Arroyo.

In contrast to other religious groups that have a more predictable matrix of desired candidates, the INC operates on a case-to-case basis. Members are surveyed on who are their preferred candidates in the national level, and the final approval comes from the top. In the local races, however, the local ministers have the latitude to decide on who to support.

More pragmatic leadership

To be sure, the INC’s clout and influence in politics is beyond doubt, rivaling that of the dominant Catholic Church. After a misstep in the 1992 presidential race, where the sect threw its support to losing candidate Eduardo 'Danding’ Cojuangco, the INC bounced back in the 1998 elections with the election of former President Estrada, which the group supported.

Political analysts say that INC’s bloc-voting members can spell the difference in tight presidential, senatorial, and local races. Candidates fiercely contest the INC endorsement, and they will have to pass through a wringer before any endorsement is given.

Former Bulacan Congressman Willie Villarama, whose family is close to the Manalos, believes that politically, those who will be disadvantaged by Ka Erdie’s death are the politicians “who have long historical ties with the INC.”

Villarama says Ka Erdie was loyal to a fault, especially to those who have helped the INC “when it was still being persecuted as a religious group.” On the other hand, his son, spared of such debts of gratitude, could adopt a “less personal, more objective approach.”

During the Marcos dictatorship, the INC allied itself with late strongman, and the strong ties were carried over to Cojuangco in the 1992 presidential race. Cojuangco was one of Marcos’s cronies.

The sect’s support for Estrada also has historical ties. The Manalos and Estrada forged their relationship when he was still mayor of San Juan.

INC purge

A former politician related to abs-cbnnews.com/Newsbreak how Manalo disengaged from a previous campaign promise after learning that the politician was running for a vice-gubernatorial post in one province. “When he found out I was running, Manalo took back his endorsement to my rival. That’s how he valued ties.”

If the elder Manalo decided with his heart, the younger Manalo’s decisions may be less clouded by emotional links.

The current purge at the INC of corrupt ministers is one sign.

Members told abs-cbnews.com/Newsbreak that Eduardo Manalo has initiated a purge of crooked members that spared no one, including in the INC inner circle. One of the casualties was a trusted emissary of Ka Erdie to Malacañang. “That’s how strict he is,” says one member.

WWF Philippines Reaches Out to Sibuyan Island

The World Wildlife Fund Philippines continues to help us, Romblomanons, in preserving and protecting the natural resources of Sibuyan Island by promoting its newest program called the "Direct Debit Donor Program," where a volunteer donates an amount of P300-P500 per month to the WWF Philippines through debit and/or credit cards like Visa and Mastercard.

This project aims to raise funds for the protection of dolphins and whales [and butandings] inhabiting and enjoying the rich marine life in Sibuyan Sea, for reforestation and preservation of greeneries nationwide, and for continuing environmental education and awareness among our people.

Prior to this, WWF-Philippines has initiated the development of livelihood systems among the Sibuyan Mangyan-Tagabukid, the indigenous group of the area, through farm extension, technological demo farms and credit. WWF has also assisted the group in obtaining a Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title and preparing a management plan covering 7,900 hectares of ancestral land.

Cory Aquino's remains arrive at Manila Cathedral

The convoy carrying the remains of former President Corazon Aquino arrived at the Manila Cathedral Monday afternoon, a television report said.

GMA News' Pia Arcangel said Mrs. Aquino's children arrived at the Manila Cathedral first and waited for the remains of their mother there.

Her remains were transferred to the Manila Cathedral from La Salle Greenhills in Mandaluyong City, where a mass was held earlier in the day.

The ride from Mandaluyong to the Manila Cathedral took almost five hours, with thousands of supporters shouting her name and confetti being showered on the streets.



A solemn atmosphere enveloped the whole Manila Cathedral as the casket of Mrs. Aquino was slowly carried to the altar. The casket was carried by members of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

A Mass was then held presided by Balanga, Bataan Bishop Socrates Villegas.

Nuns and family members surrounded the casket and offered their prayers for the late democracy icon.

Mrs. Aquino, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in March 2008, died early Saturday morning due to cardiorespiratory attack.

Rolling the Wheels of Justice

Perhaps at no other time has the justice system in the Province of Romblon seen so many strides than in the present incumbency of the good and able Congressman, Hon. Eleandro Jesus “Budoy” Madrona. In the main, his unparalleled efforts have concentrated on filling up vacant posts in the local courts or offices, and in providing support mechanisms for the enhancement of their employees.

Prior to 2007, many court cases have languished by the wayside, owing to the lack of judges. The Prosecuting arm of the province had also been greatly undermanned, hobbled by the fact that only one public prosecutor had been doing the thankless job of attending court hearings all over the whole province. Needless to say, the detrimental result was that people had become estranged from the justice system, and consequentially, from the government as a whole. To all perspectives, such an overwhelming state of neglect was paralleled only in the neglect that had been callously wrought to the medical services and hospital system in the province.

Enter Congressman Madrona. Daring the odds presented by the past dispensation, he thus spearheaded efforts to jump-start the sputtering wheels of justice in the Province of Romblon by paving the way for the installation of a fresh batch of judges, namely: Hon. Ramiro R. Geronimo (RTC Branch 81, Romblon, Romblon); Hon. Edwin Buffee (MCTC—San Agustin, Romblon); and Hon. Glen Santos (MCTC—San Andres Romblon). This present infusion of judges certainly complements the gallant judgeships of Hon. Jose M. Madrid (RTC Branch 82, Odiongan, Romblon), and Hon. Cirile F. Foja (MCTC—Odiongan, Romblon), who had expressed oneness with the good Congressman in the drive to give more in law to those who have less in life in the province.

In the same thrust, the good Congressman had already made written representations to the Department of Justice and its Regional Offices, so that additional public prosecutors may be appointed or at least detailed in Romblon, in order to reinforce the valiant efforts of the lone-workhorse of a Provincial Prosecutor, Hon. Arsenio R.M. Almadin. In the meantime, the good Congressman had dialogued with the bigwigs of the local justice system towards a more efficient allocation of court schedules in order to maximize the availability of practicing lawyers and public prosecutors, with the end-view of expediting the termination of cases and avoiding unnecessary delays and expenses being suffered by poor litigants.

In terms of affording support mechanisms to employees or personnel in the justice system, the good Congressman also keeps his doors open in order to provide reasonable financial assistance to them, by way of travel and other allowances, so that they will be able to keep abreast of challenges as public servants by attending conventions and seminars for the enhancement of theirs craft or skills.

As if his resolve was not clear already, the good Congressman had also made an unexpected appearance at the Annual IBP-Romblon Chapter Election of Officers, last March 2009 at the Provincial Capital. Needless to state, his appearance and active participation during the affair was a welcome and heartfelt surprise to the IBP members and officers. That appearance was a far-cry, and unprecedented, considering that at no other time had any public official shown such a keen and hands-on interest in the dispensation of justice in the Province of Romblon.

It has been said that an inefficient justice system is where the absence of the government most sorely felt, especially by the indigent litigants. Kudos to Congressman Madrona's efforts. One can almost see Lady Justice’s smile shining on the Province of Romblon. Kudos! - http://romblonpost.com

Palace flag at half mast; AFP offers 'volley of fire'

Malacañang Palace flew its flag at half-mast and the military fired howitzers Saturday to mourn the death of former President Corazon Aquino.

A report by Radio dzBB’s Aileen Intia said the flag was flown at half mast shortly after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared a 10-day period of mourning for the democracy icon.

At Camp Aguinaldo, national headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), troops have begun offering the traditional “volley of fire," said a report by GMA Network news.

A volley of fire is an eight successive cannon shots meant to honor presidents and commanders-in-chief who pass away. It is done every 30 minutes from daybreak until nightfall.

The same ceremony will also be done in other military camps across the Philippine archipelago, the report said.

"The AFP condoles with the family of former president Corazon Aquino and the entire nation. We will provide full military honors befitting a former president of the republic and commander in chief," said military information chief Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr.



Aquino passed away at 3:18 a.m. Saturday. The official cause of her death was cardiorespiratory arrest. [See: Former President Corazon Aquino, people power icon, passes away]

The 76-year-old Aquino was diagnosed with colon cancer in March 2008 and was treated with chemotherapy.

Last May, she underwent surgery and was brought to the Makati Medical Center in June.

In Quezon City, neighbors and other people lit candles and left flowers in front of the home of Mrs. Aquino along Times Street to show their grief.

Motorists also honked their car horns in respect for the former leader as they passed by her house.

Radio dzBB’s Mao dela Cruz reported that a family from Isabela province left three roses and lit candles near the Aquino residence

In Makati City, some members of the Black and White Movement planned an ecumenical service for Mrs. Aquino but some members wore “Never Again" pins.

Former social welfare secretary Corazon Soliman said the pins referred to Mrs. Arroyo’s alleged plot to stay in power.

Mrs. Arroyo’s critics had accused her of plotting to stay in power beyond the end of her term on June 30, 2010, by having her allies amend the 1987 Constitution to make way for a parliamentary form of government.

Former President Fidel V. Ramos on Friday expressed grief over the death of his predecessor, former President Corazon Aquino, saying her demise was a loss not only for Filipinos but for the whole world.

In a phone-patch interview with GMA News, Ramos, who took over the presidency when Mrs. Aquino bowed out of office in 1992, paid tribute to the role that the democracy icon had played in shaping the Philippines after coming out of martial rule under strongman Ferdinand Marcos.

"Not only the entire Filipino nation grieves, but the whole world. Cory Aquino represented the past and the future of our people and led in the direction of a better future for our people," Ramos said.

“Dito sa aming lahat sa aking pamilya ay nakikiramay sa pamilya at sa lahat ng mahal sa buhay ni Cory Aquino," said Ramos, who only learned about Mrs. Aquino’s death on radio.


Ramos, together with then defense chief Juan Ponce Enrile, led a military uprising in February 1986 that sparked the EDSA “People Power Revolution," toppled the Marcos regime and propelled Mrs. Aquino to power.

One of Mrs. Aquino's first appointees was then Lieutenant General Ramos, then Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) vice chief of staff, whom she named chief of staff and promoted to four-star rank.

As military chief of staff and later secretary of defense, Ramos stood by Mrs. Aquino in the most difficult times of her presidency, helping quell coup attempts mounted mostly by military officers who helped topple Marcos.

During the 1992 presidential elections, Mrs. Aquino threw her support behind Ramos, discarding then House Speaker Ramon Mitra, who was the choice of the ruling Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) - the party formed by her political allies to back her presidency.

24 SEASON 7 , The END?

I' am a die hard fan of 24 Tv Series ever since. I bought the copy of season 1 to season 4 from Quiapo (pirated). With the help of technology, I manage to download the remaining seasons trough the internet.

For almost 4 years, the 24 Season 7 is about to end. I will miss all those magnifying stunts done by the main character(Jack Bauer). His loyalty and courage, its really amazing to see those encridible things.

NEW YORK — Even if a grateful nation had been applauding Jack Bauer at the season's end of "24," he couldn't hear them.

He was last seen hospitalized in a coma. Infected by a bioweapon targeting America, counter-terrorist hero Jack had taken the hit while trying to save his fellow citizens. Then, woozier and sweatier by the hour, he managed to foil the terrorists.

By Monday's two-hour finale of the Fox TV thriller "24," all Jack wants is — no, not a Medal of Freedom — but to die in peace.

That's not going to happen. He's Jack Bauer, he's played by series star Kiefer Sutherland, and the series has plenty of life left in it. No wonder Jack's daughter, Kim, arrives at his bedside after he received solace from a Muslim cleric and demands experimental surgery for him that involves taking stem cells from her body — surgery that Jack had nixed hours earlier.

"I'm sorry, Dad," says Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) to her unconscious father, "but I'm not ready to let you go."

The series' 24-hour-real-time season ended with a double episode that spanned from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

It brought some welcome closure to the raging question of, "What's the deal with Tony Almeida?"

Tony had been a loyal, key associate of Jack's at the L.A.-based Counter Terrorism Unit. But he was believed dead two seasons ago. Now here he was at the start of the seventh season in Washington, D.C., with Carlos Bernard reprising the role, shockingly risen from the grave and hooked up with the bad guys.

Or so it seemed. But soon viewers learned Tony was only pretending to support this dastardly force, aiming to bring it down from within.

Or so it seemed. Then viewers got the strong impression he really did support the evildoers, which made him the mortal enemy of Jack and all good Americans.

But that still wasn't quite it. In the finale, Tony disclosed to Jack he had had one simple, nonpolitical obsession: to rise through the ranks of the multilayered crime organization to reach the isolated man at the top, Alan Wilson. Tony wanted to earn himself a face-to-face meeting with the boss — then kill him for murdering Tony's wife years ago.

"Everything you've done today is for personal revenge?!" Jack gasped in his final confrontation with Tony, whereupon a spirited debate in situational ethics inconveniently unfolded.

"It's about justice!" Tony argued.

"Justice! You killed innocent people!"

"I did what I had to do to get Alan Wilson here," seethed Tony. "And now, he's gonna die."

"You kill Alan Wilson, and no one's ever gonna know the full extent of his conspiracy."

Jack had a point. Wilson had turned out to be an even bigger demon than Jonas Hodges, the villainous military contractor played deliciously by Jon Voight as the season's showcase baddie. But Hodges was blown to pieces in a car a few episodes ago, an attack set in motion by the president's chief of staff as payback for Hodges killing her brother. Making matters worse, the chief of staff was the president's daughter.

This was a sticky situation for President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones) when her daughter confessed. But, being highly principled, the grief-stricken Mom saw no choice. Olivia (Sprague Grayden) was handed over to the authorities.

Next season, maybe President Taylor will still be in power and continue to be haunted by this scandal.

Maybe Alan Wilson (played by Will Patton) will also still be on the scene. He wasn't killed in the finale. Nor was Tony, whose act of vigilante justice Jack was able to stop. Spiteful and raging, Tony was taken into custody.

Both could be giving Jack new headaches when he comes out of that coma for another challenging day. Until then, with another viewer-pleasing "24" season concluded, he could use some down time.

PCG, Romblon folk shoo whales back to sea

The Philippine Coast Guard on Wednesday lauded local fisher folk for helping out in the efforts that led to the immediate and safe return of some 100 melon-headed whales stranded off the coast of Romblon on Tuesday.

Radio dzBB’s Carlo Mateo quoted Coast Guard commandant Vice Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo as describing the local villagers as heroes for coming to the rescue when they spotted the whales off the coast of Odiongan town, a third class municipality in central Romblon.

The latest stranding happened on the heels of an earlier similar incident in Bataan where some 300 melon-headed whales suddenly emerged off the shore off Pilar and Orion towns. Local fishermen and authorities waded into the water and successfully drove the whales away, but not after three whales had died.

Picking up lessons from the Bataan experience, Tamayo said the Coast Guard employed safer and more effective measures to help the mammals make their way back to deeper parts of the ocean.

Tamayo said he has already mobilized his team to troop to the waters and conduct regular monitoring to avoid a similar scenario from happening anew.

The Coast Guard official said he thinks the whales could have lost their way as an effect of global climate change.

Over the weekend, around 200 pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins also found their way off the shorelines of the Narcoopa Beach on King Island, a part of Tasmania. Only around 60 of them were safely ushered back to the sea.

The series of whale stranding has already prompted the International World Ocean Conference to take up the matter when its members convene, the report added.

Perplexed experts have yet to ascertain the actual cause of the unusual behavior of the whales, with some attributing it to a seismic movement beneath the ocean while others saying such whales tend to stay close together at all times. - Mark Merueñas, GMANews.TV

How to fix Code 39 error with DVD/CD-ROM drives in Windows XP or Vista

Almost all computer users come across system errors at one point or another. They may occur at any time-while you are working on an application, trying to access a peripheral device, or have just switched on your PC. System errors occur due to a wide variety of reasons, out of which, registry problems and malware, such as viruses and spyware are one of the main causes. Whenever a system error occurs on your Windows system, an error message is displayed on the screen to inform you about the error. These messages, although quite technical and not very clear, can indicate how you should go about fixing a particular type of error. Let’s now see what causes code 39 system error when you try to access your CD-drive, and how to fix the error on your Windows XP or Vista computer. We will also discuss some preventive measures to ensure that such system errors do not occur on your PC.

Fixing Code 39 Error

If your CD-ROM drive is not visible in My Computer, you may see the following error message displayed with the CD or DVD drive item in your Device Manager. (Steps to open Device Manager are discussed later in the article.)

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Using Device Manager

To fix this error, first try to update the driver from the Device Manager. To open Device Manager, right-click My Computer on your Desktop, and then on the Hardware tab, select the Device Manager button.

In the Device Manager window, identify the CD or DVD drive item (with Yellow exclamation mark), right-click on it and select Update Driver. Follow the screen instructions to update the device driver and restart your PC.

Using Registry Editor

If updating the driver does not resolve the problem, it indicates that there is a problem in the registry. To fix this problem, you may have to remove a few keys from the registry.

Note: Be careful while working with the registry editor because changes done to the registry using the Registry Editor are irreversible and mistakes can leave you with more problems than when you started. Therefore, it is recommended that you make a backup of the registry before proceeding with the changes.

After you have removed the registry keys listed below, you will have to reinstall all applications that you use for CD or DVD recording to make them work properly.

To fix the error by editing the registry, perform the following steps:

1. Exit and close all applications currently running on your PC.
2. On Start > Run type Regedit and press the Enter key.
3. Next, navigate to the following registry key:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. Delete any of the following registry entries if they exist under this key:
