Athletics’ golden woman shares her legacy

LIFE never seems to stop, especially for people who are always on the run. For legendary athlete and Iron Woman Elma Muros-Posadas, that line may just seem too literal.

Even after retiring from sports in September 2001, Elma Muros-Posadas, now at 40, still continues to pursue her passion, through lighter-weighed competitions and coaching.

Back in the 2004 World Masters, she won a silver medal for the 400-meter hurdle competition.

Passion for sport

“I am willing to teach those who want to learn, because I would hate to see them waste their talents,” says Muros-Posadas during the 50th Anniversary of Tide, where she was honored along with four other iconic Filipina, Gloria Diaz, Caridad Sanchez, Boots Anson-Roa, and Rosa Rosal for their contributions in their respective field.

Coaching is not new to her as back in 2002, she handled the University of the East women’s track and field team and led them to the UAAP crown against the league’s perennial powerhouse University of Santo Tomas.

Muros-Posadas also once mentored the Far Eastern University track team and gave the school five championships. She has also trained students at Brent International School in Santa Rosa Laguna, where her daughter, Klarizze, is studying.

She is now serving as a consultant in Grassroots Level for the Philippine Sports Commission, where she helps in discovering new talents in different schools in far-flung provinces.

Sports, her life

Sports has and always been her life. She spends her other time training Klarizze, who is trying to follow her footsteps some day.

“Ayokong isipin ng anak ko na ang mother niya ay si Elma Muros,” she says.

Determination, will, and discipline, Elma says, are essentials for those who want to succeed.

“Hindi ka naman pwedeng maging champion, kung hindi di mo paghihirapan diba?”

“Don’t surrender. Walang imposible sa taong nagtitiyaga at determinado,” the Iron Woman ended.

Elma Muros-Posadas! Pride of Magdiwang Romblon

Elma Muros-Posadas, a sprinter, hurdler and long jumper, has collected a total of 13 gold medals from her numerous stints at the Southeast Asian Games. She also brought home a bronze medal in 400-meter hurdles from the 1990 Beijing Asiad and another bronze in long jump from the 1994 Hiroshima Asiad.

This multi-talented woman was born in Magdiwang, Romblon. She finished her elementary at Magdiwang Elementary School.

She was discovered by Miss Susana F. Relox (my Aunt) and Mr. Manzo (the late school teacher in Magdiwang Elementary School). After then, she competed in many tournaments, the District Meet (inter-Sibuyan Island Tournament), the Provincial Meet, and of course the Palarong Pambansa.

Magdiwang Elementary School

The Palarong Pambansa Program is an annual multi-level national scholastic athletic competition conducted by the Depatment of Education and participated in by the elementary and secondary pupils / students both from public and private schools.

In this annual event, many schools discovered the potential of Elma Muros. She was even invited to the National Team in that year. This was just the beginning of Elma Muros career. There's a saying, "Champions dedicate themselves to prepare for success".
